Yhdysvalloissa investoinnit kasvuyritysrahastoihin alimmillaan yhdeksään vuoteen

Yhdysvaltalaisten pääomasijoittajien rahastojen kerryttäminen oli viime neljänneksellä Wall Street Journalin (WSJ) mukaan alimmillaan yhdeksään vuoteen. Lehti käytti lähteenään datayhtiö Preqinin selvitystä, joka mukaan pääomasijoittajat keräsivät neljänneksellä uusia sijoituksia rahastoihinsa 20,6 miljardin dollarin edestä. Summa on alle puolet vuoden 2022 kolmannella neljänneksellä kerätyistä sijoituksista.

Lehden mukaan pääomasijoittajat ovat myös itse reagoineet teknologiateollisuuden hidastumiseen joko sijoittamalla hitaammin tai veloittamalla sijoittajiltaan pienempiä varainhoitokuluja. Andreessen Horowitz on kertonut sijoittavansa mm. viimeisimmän kryptorahaston varoja aiempaa hitaammin ja Sequoia taas on kertonut sitovansa viimeisimpien rahastojen varainhoitokulut reaalisoitujen sijoitusten määrään.

Fundraising by venture-capital firms hit a nine-year low in the fourth quarter, as the macroeconomic pressures that already weighed on technology startups began to affect the investors who underpin the industry. 

Venture firms raised $20.6 billion in new funds in the fourth quarter. That was a 65% drop from the year-earlier quarter and the lowest fourth-quarter amount since 2013, according to data firm Preqin Ltd., which tracks venture-fund data. The amount was also less than half the level raised in the preceding three months, the first time fundraising volumes decreased from the third to fourth quarter since 2009, the data show.

Venture firm Andreessen Horowitz told its limited partners in recent months that it would invest its fourth crypto fund of $4.5 billion more slowly than the third fund, people familiar with the matter said, alleviating the need to raise another crypto fund soon. The company had raised its fourth fund less than a year after announcing its third crypto fund of $2.2 billion, an unusually fast pace. 

Some firms have made the rare decision to reduce the fees they charge limited partners to better reflect the slowdown in startup investing activity. In December, Sequoia Capital said it would allow limited partners in its inaugural crypto and ecosystem funds to pay management fees as a percentage of capital the fund has requested for investments. Venture firms typically charge their investors fees as a percentage of committed capital, and then take an additional cut from profits.

Microsoft valmistelee isoa Teams päivitystä

The Verge raportoi Microsoftin valmistautuvan julkaisemaan ensi kuussa merkittävän päivityksen yhtiön työpaikkaviestintäsovellus Teamsiin. Uuden päivityksen myötä Teamsin pitäisi jatkossa käyttää 50 % vähemmän muistia ja myös merkittävästi vähemmän prosessoriyksikköä sekä virtaa.

Microsoft is preparing to launch a new version of Microsoft Teams next month that has been rebuilt from the ground up to significantly improve its system resource usage on PCs and laptops. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the software giant has recently started testing this new Teams client broadly inside Microsoft, with plans to roll out a preview to Microsoft Teams users in March.

Known as Microsoft Teams 2.0 or 2.1 internally, Microsoft has been working on this new Teams client for years. The app should use 50 percent less memory, tax the CPU less, and result in better battery life on laptops.

Linux 6.2 julkaistiin

Mainitaan vielä, että Linus Torvalds ja muut Linuxin ydinkehittäjät ovat julkaisseet uuden version Linuxin kernelistä. Versio 6.2:n merkittävä uusi ominaisuus on pyörittää Linuxia Applen M1-sarjan prosessoreilla. Lisäksi päivityksen myötä kerneliin tulee mm. parempi tuki Intelin Arc näytönohjaimille, sekä Sonyn DualShock 4 peliohjaimelle. Zdnetiltä:

Linux 6.2 was released yesterday, and Linus Torvalds described the latest Linux kernel release as, "Maybe it's not a sexy LTS release like 6.1 ended up being, but all those regular pedestrian kernels want some test love too." 

For once, I disagree with Torvalds. 

By adding upstream support for the Apple M1 Pro,  M1 Max, and M1 Ultra chips, newer Mac owners can look forward to running Linux on their M1-powered machines. And, for techies, that's sexy.

In addition, the Linux 6.2 kernel includes numerous features with contributions from companies such as Intel, AMD, Google, and Red Hat. Notable additions include stable support for Intel Arc Graphics (DG2/Alchemist) enabled out of the box and initial support for Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 series "Ampere" accelerated graphics with Nouveau open-source code. The Linux 6.2 kernel also includes updated drivers. This includes support for Sony DualShock 4 gamepads, sensors, and fans in the OneXPlayer gaming handheld, Habana Labs' Gaudi2 AI accelerator, and Asus motherboards.

Chroma on uusi avoimen lähdekoodin vektoritietokanta

Olen viime viikonlopusta asti testaillut uutta avoimenlähdekoodin vektoritietokantaa nimeltä Chroma. Projektin takana ovat entinen Metalla työskennellyt insinööri Anton Troynikov ja robotiika-alan yrittäjä Jeff Huber.

Projekti on toistaiseksi vielä hyvin aikaisessa vaiheessa ja siinä on runsaasti bugeja, mutta olen äimistynyt siitä miten helposti sen kanssa saa tehtyä hyvän semanttisen haun. Sen lisäksi, että Chromaan on helppo integroida mikä tahansa kielimalli, antaa se myös mahdollisuuden tehdä yhdistelmähakuja, jossa ensin filtteröidään dokumentit hakusanan perusteella ja sitten filtteröityihin dokumentteihin tehdään itse semanttinen haku.

Firmassa työskentelee perustajien lisäksi yksi työntekijä ja yritys on saanut jonkin verran rahoitusta:

Jotain projektin alkuvaiheessa olemisesta kertoo se, että onnistuin saamaan projektin Discordissa teknistä tukea suoraan yhtiön toimitusjohtajalta, Jeff Huberilta. Pinnan alla projekti käyttää mm. DuckDB ja Clickhouse -tietokantoja, FastAPI:a serverinä ja hnswlibiä itse vektoreiden tallentamiseen.
