Meta kertoi eilen avaavansa Quest -laitteidensa käyttöjärjestelmän muiden laitevalmistajien käyttöä varten. Yhtiö kertoi muun muassa Asuksen ja Lenovon suunnittelevan sekatodellisuus (XR) laitteita jotka käyttäisivät sen Meta Horizon OS -käyttöjärjestelmää.
Today we’re taking the next step toward our vision for a more open computing platform for the metaverse. We’re opening up the operating system powering our Meta Quest devices to third-party hardware makers, giving more choice to consumers and a larger ecosystem for developers to build for. We’re working with leading global technology companies to bring this new ecosystem to life and making it even easier for developers to build apps and reach their audiences on the platform.
This new hardware ecosystem will run on Meta Horizon OS, the mixed reality operating system that powers our Meta Quest headsets. We chose this name to reflect our vision of a computing platform built around people and connection—and the shared social fabric that makes this possible. ASUS’s Republic of Gamers will use its expertise as a leader in gaming solutions to develop an all-new performance gaming headset.
Lenovo will draw on its experience co-designing Oculus Rift S, as well as deep expertise in engineering leading devices like the ThinkPad laptop series, to develop mixed reality devices for productivity, learning, and entertainment.
Xbox and Meta teamed up last year to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) to Meta Quest, letting people play Xbox games on a large 2D virtual screen in mixed reality. Now, we’re working together again to create a limited-edition Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox.
Embracer Group hajoaa kolmeksi eri yhtiöksi
Ruotsalainen pelijätti Embracer Group kertoi eilen jakautuvansa kolmeen itsenäiseen ja listattuun peliyhtiöön. Embracer on uudelleenjärjestellyt merkittävästi toimintaansa sen jälkeen kun yhtiö ei onnistunut solmimaan n. kahden miljardin dollariin kumppanuussopimusta.
Uusista yhtiöistä Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends tulee jatkossakin keskittymään ns. AAA -pelien tekemiseen ja sen omistukseen siirtyy mm. Lord of the Rings- ja Tomb Raider sarjojen videopelioikeudet. Toinen yhtiöistä, Asmodee Group keskittyy lautapelien kehittämiseen ja julkaisemiseen ja kolmas, Coffee Stain & Friends tuottaa indie -pelejä. The Vergeltä:
Swedish gaming conglomerate Embracer Group announced plans on Monday to split itself into three distinct games and entertainment companies: Asmodee Group, Coffee Stain & Friends, and Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends. These will be separate, publicly listed companies, according to Embracer, which says the move will allow “each entity to better focus on their respective core strategies and offer more differentiated and distinct equity stories for existing and new shareholders.”

Embracer Group, which is known for acquiring the rights to a dizzying number of franchises like Tomb Raider and Lord of the Rings, has been aggressively “restructuring” since losing out on a $2 billion partnership deal last year. Since then, the company has shut down several projects and studios, laid off employees globally, and sold Borderlands developer Gearbox to Take-Two for a fraction of the $1.3 billion it was valued at when it was purchased three years ago.
Piilaakson jätit sijoittivat uuteen energiastartuppiin
Mainitaan vielä, että mm. Sam Altman ja Andreessen Horotwitz ovat sijoittaneet 20 miljoonan dollarin edestä uudenlaiseen aurinkoenergiakasvuyritykseen nimeltä Exowatt, jonka on tarkoituksena tuottaa energiaa tekoälymalleja kouluttaville ja pyörittäville tietokeskuksille.
Aurinkopaneelien sijasta Exowattin valmistavat moduulit muuttavat aurinkoenergian lämmöksi, joka voidaan moottoreilla muuttaa myöhemmin sähköksi. Yhtiön lähestymistavan etuna on, että se kykenee säilömään lämpöä noin vuorokauden ajan, jolloin ne pystyvät tuottamaan sähköä myös silloin kun aurinko ei paista. Wall Street Journalilta (WSJ):

Sam Altman and venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz are among the investors putting $20 million into Exowatt, a company launched to tackle the clean-energy needs of big data centers.

Instead of solar panels arrayed across a field, Exowatt has developed modules roughly the size of shipping containers that contain solar lenses. The lenses convert energy from the sun into heat. That heat can then be used to warm up cheap, basic materials much like electricity heats up a toaster, allowing the modules to store energy for up to 24 hours a day.
The goal is to take advantage of the cost reductions from storing energy as heat. To produce electricity, the module passes the heat through an engine. Many other companies are working on different approaches to solar and low-cost heat batteries, but Exowatt says it is unique because it combines them in one unit.

(Teknologia)yritysten historiaa läpikäyvä mainio Acquired -podcast julkaisi massiivisen yli neljä tuntia kestävän jakson Microsoftista ja yhtiön historiasta. Olen ehtinyt kuuntelemaan tästä n. 90 minuuttia ja suosikki osioni on toistaiseksi ollut Microsftin ja Applen yhteistyöstä 80-luvulla.
Yhtiön sovelluskehitysyksikkö keskittyi alussa Excelin kehittämiseen nimenomaan Applen tietokoneille, ennenkuin käytännössä koko yhtiö pivotoi Windowsiin 80 -luvun lopussa.
