Wall Street Journalilta:
Apple’s revenue declined for the fifth time in the past six quarters, dragged down by ailing iPhone sales and new competition from smartphone rivals in China.
Still, shares of Apple rose more than 7% in after-market trading as the company authorized $110 billion in stock buybacks and signaled that the current quarter is likely to see revenue growth. Also, while sales and profits fell in the March quarter, the numbers were slightly better than analyst expectations.
…
For the first three months of the year, Samsung reclaimed the number one spot for worldwide smartphone market share, according to research firm IDC. Apple’s iPhone unit shipments slipped nearly 10% for the quarter over the previous year, while the total smartphone market expanded about 8% annually. Apple had briefly become the number one smartphone vendor near the end of 2023.
In the most recent quarter, iPhones sales declined 10.5% from the prior year to $46 billion, in line with analyst projections.
…
For the quarter, Apple sales were $90.75 billion, down 4.3% from the prior year, and profit fell 2.2% to $23.6 billion. Revenue from Apple’s services business, which includes App Store sales and subscription revenue from music, TV and other offerings, grew 14.2% to $23.87 billion.
Apple said it expects overall sales growth in the April-to-June quarter be in the “low single digits” percentage-wise.
The Vergeltä:
Apple is exempting more developers from the Core Technology Fee (CTF) it introduced in the European Union. In an update on Thursday, Apple announced that developers of free apps without monetization won’t have to pay the new fee.
To qualify, Apple says free apps must not have “revenue of any kind,” including money made from physical or digital goods, as well as advertising. “This condition is intended to give students, hobbyists, and other non-commercial developers an opportunity to create a popular app without paying the CTF,” Apple writes in the update.
The company also says small developers with less than €10 million in global annual business revenue will receive a three-year free “on-ramp” to the CTF “to help them create innovative apps and rapidly grow their business.”
UMG:n musiikki palaa TikTokiin
Ja mainitaan vielä, että maailman suurimman levy-yhtiön Universal Music Groupin (UMG) musiikki on taas palaamassa TikTokiin, sillä yhtiöt kertoivat päässeensä sopuun lisenssineuvotteluissaan. UMG:n musiikit poistuivat palvelusta helmikuussa, kun levy-yhtiön ja sosiaalisen median välinen lisensointisopimus umpeutui, eivätkä yhtiöden väliset neuvottelut uudesta sopimuksesta olleet edenneet. Varietyltä:
The months-long standoff between Universal Music Group and TikTok over royalty payments and AI policies is finally over, at least for the time being, with the announcement that the two entities have struck a deal to bring the label’s music back on the platform.
As part of the agreement, the companies stated that they will “deliver improved remuneration for UMG’s songwriters and artists, new promotional and engagement opportunities for their recordings and songs and industry-leading protections with respect to generative AI.”
UMG’s music will return to the platform imminently, and the companies will collaborate on realizing “new monetization opportunities utilizing TikTok’s growing e-commerce capabilities and will work together on campaigns supporting UMG’s artists across genres and territories globally.”

Ezra Klein keskustelee vihreän kasvun mahdollisuuksista
Ezra Kleinin podcastin uusimmalla jaksolla vieraili Our World In Data -järjestön tutkija Hannah Ritchie, joka keskusteli Kleinin kanssa uudesta kirjastaan missä Ritchie on analysoinut ihmisten mahdollisuuksia hidastaa tai pysäyttää ilmastonmuutosta ilman, että se rajoittaisi meidän elintasoa.
Ritchien loppupäätelmä on yllättävän optimistinen ja varsinkin aurinkoenergian hinnan lasku viimeisen vuosikymmenen aikana on ollut merkittävä tekijä positiivisessa kehityksessä. Kleiniltä:
A decade ago, I was feeling pretty pessimistic about climate change. The politics of mitigating global warming just seemed impossible: asking people to make sacrifices, or countries to slow their development, and delay dreams of better, more prosperous lives.
But the world today looks different. The costs of solar and wind power have plummeted. Same for electric batteries. And a new politics is starting to take hold: that maybe we can invest and invent and build our way out of this crisis. But some very hard problems remain. Chief among them? Cows.
Hannah Ritchie is the deputy editor and lead researcher at Our World in Data and the author of “Not the End of the World: How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet.” She’s pored over the data on this question and has come away more optimistic than many. “It’s just not true that we’ve had these solutions just sitting there ready to build for decades and decades, and we just haven’t done anything,” she told me. “We’re in a fundamentally different position going forward.”
