A few years ago, the Apple Inc. industrial design group presented an idea to executives on the company’s health team: a smart ring that would take health-tracking features from the Apple Watch and put them on your finger.
More recently, engineers at the company’s labs in Cupertino, California, have discussed the possibility of developing smart glasses — something similar to new products from Meta Platforms Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. The glasses could provide audio (so users don’t have to wear AirPods) and take advantage of AI and cameras to identify things in the surrounding world. The device also could act as a stepping stone toward Apple’s long-held dream: true augmented reality spectacles that you can wear all day.
Both ideas would bolster an area that’s already become a solid business for Apple: wearable devices. The division that includes the Apple Watch and AirPods now accounts for 10% of the company’s revenue, up from less than 5% a decade ago.
…
For now, the ring idea is just that — an idea. The company isn’t actively developing such a device, but there are certainly people within the walls of Apple’s campus promoting the concept. The glasses, meanwhile, are in an exploratory phase known as “technology investigation” within Apple’s hardware engineering division. The company also is looking into other ideas, such as equipping AirPods with cameras.
Microsoft ehdotti Bingin myymistä Applelle vuonna 2018
Yhdysvaltojen oikeusministeriön ja Googlen välisessä kilpailuoikeustapaukseen liittyen julkistettiin viime perjantaina dokumentteja, joissa mainitaan miten Microsoft olisi ehdottanut oman hakuyksikkönsä Bingin myyntiä Applelle vuonna 2018. Apple ei kuitenkaan tästä innostunut, sillä yhtiön mukaan Microsoftin panostukset Bingiin eivät olleet riittäviä.
Lisäksi dokumenteista paljastuu Microsoftin käyttäneen yhteensä 100 miljardia dollaria Bingin kehittämiseen n. 20 vuoden ajalta. CNBC:ltä:
Microsoft offered to sell its Bing search engine to Apple in 2018, Google said in a court filing earlier this month. The document, from Google’s antitrust case against the U.S. Justice Department, was unsealed on Friday.
…
The Justice Department said in its own newly unsealed filing that Microsoft has spent almost $100 billion on Bing over 20 years. The Windows and Office software maker launched Bing in 2009, following search efforts under the MSN and Windows Live brands.
…
Google said in its filing that when Microsoft reached out to Apple in 2018, emphasizing gains in Bing’s quality, Microsoft offered to either sell Bing to Apple or establish a Bing-related joint venture with the company.
“Microsoft search quality, their investment in search, everything was not significant at all,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, according to the filing. “And so everything was lower. So the search quality itself wasn’t as good. They weren’t investing at any level comparable to Google or to what Microsoft could invest in. And their advertising organization and how they monetize was not very good either.”
After seeing Sora, what are your current feelings about how fast AI technology is moving and how it might affect entertainment in the near term?
I have been watching AI very closely and watching the advancements very closely. I was in the middle of, and have been planning for the last four years, about an $800 million expansion at the studio, which would’ve increased the backlot a tremendous size — we were adding 12 more soundstages. All of that is currently and indefinitely on hold because of Sora and what I’m seeing. I had gotten word over the last year or so that this was coming, but I had no idea until I saw recently the demonstrations of what it’s able to do. It’s shocking to me.
What in particular was shocking to you about its capabilities?
I no longer would have to travel to locations. If I wanted to be in the snow in Colorado, it’s text. If I wanted to write a scene on the moon, it’s text, and this AI can generate it like nothing. If I wanted to have two people in the living room in the mountains, I don’t have to build a set in the mountains, I don’t have to put a set on my lot. I can sit in an office and do this with a computer, which is shocking to me.
It makes me worry so much about all of the people in the business. Because as I was looking at it, I immediately started thinking of everyone in the industry who would be affected by this, including actors and grip and electric and transportation and sound and editors, and looking at this, I’m thinking this will touch every corner of our industry.

Pentagonin oppeja Ukrainasta
Taylor told the story of an Apache helicopter pilot who successfully avoided air defense systems during a simulated attack. Personnel portraying the enemy forces were unable to determine the path the helicopter took, but after examining commercially available cellphone data, they were able to map the journey of a device traveling across the desert at 120 miles per hour. It revealed where the Apache flew to evade the defenses.
The general is adamant about stamping out such behaviors. He likens the threat to that posed by cigarette smoking on the front lines during World War II, when enemy forces looked for bright orange flickers to help identify their targets.
“I think our addiction to cellphones is equally as threatening,” Taylor said. “This is the new cigarette in the foxhole.”
Artikkelissa käsiteltiin myös paljon droonien roolia sodankäynnissä.
